Dutch National Initiative for Sustainable Development (NIDO)
The Dutch National Initiative for Sustainable Development (NIDO) has the objective to achieve leaps forward in durable development based on, and in co-operation with, existing programmes to that extent. Sustainable Development means creating a link between prosperity and well being, a link between economic growth and improvement of the living environment.
Sustainable development in the Netherlands needs a new impulse. An impulse which will make further improvement possible. This requires a collective effort. All results and insights which have been obtained up to now need to be combined. NIDO employs an integral approach in which various parties from a wide vision on sustainable development may find each other. The combination of experience and insights of people in business, the government, social institutions and science may help to bring the issues of sustainable development closer to a solution.

Organisation
NIDO possesses an interactive character. It thinks independently of existing frameworks and it frequently adapts its policy to new developments. The NIDO organisation is geared to doing this. This means that it is a small professional bureau and a group of people around it which, based on their expertise and experience are put to work on a temporary basis to provide assistance with specific themes.
Programmes
NIDO's programme 'From Financial to Sustainable Performance' aims at initiating and supporting transformation processes within companies, focussed on linking stakeholders' and shareholders' values. The programme's experiences and knowledge will be widely disseminated.

The objective of the programme ‘CSR in international context’ is to concretise, in cooperation with 20 Dutch companies, how companies can put social responsibility into practice in an international context.
The two main questions are:
- As an international company, how can you carry out CSR in different countries while taking into account the local culture, the social context and government policy? How can the corporate company policy in this area be optimally coordinated to the policy to be conducted at local offices and vice versa?
- As a company, how can you take social responsibility within the international chains in which you operate? Could a code of conduct in sustainable entrepreneurship in the chain be helpful in this effort?

Virtual office
NIDO is set up to help combine the forces of various parties. This requires continuous interaction between people who are on different locations in the Netherlands and beyond. This interaction is made possible by a virtual office. Everyone who is linked to one of the NIDO programmes can access the office by means of a password.
